It works really well, but there's a downside... Nov 18, 2012
By TT Divine Not wanting to pay for professional replating, I decided to try JAX Silver Plating Solution. Now, to be fair, the bottle warns you to use in a well ventilated location and to wear gloves, but these items must be stressed here because while the product does leave a very thin layer of silver on your item, the process stinks to high heaven. (I mean eye-watering stench here, not simply a bad smell.) It's best if you do this outside if possible. Also, in my initial enthusiasm for the product, I failed to put gloves on and my hands reeked of chemical-smelling rotten eggs for days. Please, please, please read and follow the directions to the letter.
Now for the good part. The product does work. It will shine even the most horrid looking silver, provided you're willing to put in the work to get it to shine. This isn't some instant chemical reaction like the aluminum plate with the salt, but rather will leave your minor plate loss looking fabulous and mostly unnoticeable.
In the end, I will still need to replate the tray my aunt left me, but it's nice that I can still use it and it still looks clean and bright after a coat of Jax. Try it, but follow those directions!
